Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Friday Week 2 of Advent - December 11, 2020

FRIDAY 2ND WEEK OF ADVENT

Isaiah 48:17-19

Matthew 11:16-19

WE SEEK TO PLEASE GOD NOT MAN

As human beings, we always compare between people and judge what they do. We complain when people do not do what we expect or things do not go the way we think they should. It is always the case that spectators know the game better than the players. If you should listen to what people are saying about you, you will never do anything good. This is because people must complain about whatever you do.

The comparison between two people have made many people lose what they have.

In the gospel reading of today, we see that the people complained about the personality of John the Baptist. He was seen as an ascetic, a quiet and reserved person and thus was resented by many. Jesus as we know was moving everywhere, he was a friend to everyone. He was close to sinners, tax collectors, drunkards and people of all sorts of life. The same people who complained that John the Baptist did not relate with the people, began to complain that Jesus talks too much and he is found among sinners instead of moving away from them.

One can truly never please human beings. People comment on everything you do. As the gospel reading tells us today, nothing one can do so as to please everyone. If you play music and expect them to dance, they may complain that the music is not loud enough or the beat or rhythm is not good; if you do not play music, then you are a dull person.

Jesus therefore encourages us today to strive to please God and not man. If you think that people will love you because of what you have done, you will be heartbroken. Just do what you know is best according to the dictates of your conscience, and you will receive accolades from God himself. God help us. Amen.
