Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 4 of Ordinary Time Year I - February 1, 2021

MONDAY 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Hebrews 11:32-40

Mark 5:1-20

THE HUMAN PERSON IS VERY PRECIOUS

Most times when I see mad people in the streets, I feel so much pity for them. One can only imagine the pitiable conditions they live in. This is the kind of feeling that comes to my mind as I go through the gospel reading of today. A man is possessed by a demon that makes him injure himself. He became so violent that people were afraid of him.

What is very appealing in the narrative is the fact that about two thousand pigs were sacrificed for the life of a man people saw as useless. It is a great lesson for us all that all humans are very important irrespective of their mental and physical state. Let us seek the liberation of one another. God help us. Amen.

THEME:  WITH FAITH YOU CAN DO GREAT THINGS

Greetings beloved people of God. I welcome you to "My Catholic Homily Digest". On this First day of February, I wish to reflect with you on the theme: " With Faith You Can Do Great Things". Beloved, I wish to congratulate and welcome you to the month of February. I pray that as you walk in the statute of the Lord this month, you shall experience abundant of blessings and favours in all that concerns you. Oh yes, the man of faith shall do mighty works says the Lord of host. Beloved in Christ, have you taken time to reflect on the reason why some people fail, while others achieve and succeed in almost everything they do. The reason is this, most times, those who fail, often see obstacles everywhere, while those who succeed, see potential opportunities in every situation. Many great men and women of history, who impacted positively in the world, were mainly people of great faith and courage, who blazed the odds feared by many others. Thus, the fainthearted, fearful and doubtful, can hardly please the lord or do extraordinary things.

In the first reading of today, the author of the letter to the Hebrews, praised several great men and prophets of old, for having the courage to do what was right even if it was unpopular. It was their undying faith in God and in his promises, that made them to endure all kinds of bodily pain, sacrifice, torture and deprivation, because they know the course they are fighting for. As Christians, we ought to be people of faith, because without faith, we  cannot access the arsenal of God's mighty help. Often times, what we do in faith may appear irrational, foolish or unpopular in the eyes of men. It may even make us to lose certain temporal material benefit. But if we remain firm and courageous, them we shall receive the mightiest of all benefit.

Child of God, as we begin the second month of this year, February today, I want you to garner all the faith you can. I want you to be courageous. I want you to dispel all forms of fear and doubt within you. I want you to trust completely in God's divine providence, protection and provision. I want you to confront that your fears, I want you to take that risk, I want you to speak that truth, I want you to dare to dream big, I want you to undertake that challenge, I want you expect something great, and I want you believe in yourself and in the God who have the powers to do infinitely above more than we can ever think of, ask for or imagine (Cf. Eph. 3:20).

Oh that today you would listen to his voice harden not your hearts (Ps.95:7-8)

LET US PRAY : Lord Jesus, help me to trust completely in your grace and dispel all projection of fears from the evil legion in me....

The Lord be with you....... and with your Spirit.

May Almighty God bless you in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit......Amen

THEME:  WITHOUT FAITH, NO MIRACLE CAN BE EFFECTED

Greetings beloved people of God. I welcome you to "My Catholic Homily Digest". On this Thirtieth day of January, I wish to reflect with you on the theme: " Without Faith, No Miracle Can Be Effected". Beloved in Christ, my work in the rural part of Northern Nigeria, and the personal contacts I make with the locals here, have made me to realise more convincingly, the power of faith. Often times, when most of us who are privileged to have certain basic provisions of life speak and think of faith, we do so in the abstract. Not knowing in concrete terms what it implies. You will know the degree of your faith, if the only thing you have to rely on for sustenance is on the grace of God to provide for your daily need, to keep you healthy, and to grant you healing because there is no money for hospital bills. When you rely solely on God to keep you  safe from herdsmen, bandits and marauding killers because there is not a single security personnel in sight. Thus, according to the definition and mind of the Church, 'faith is the assurance of things hoped for, a deep conviction of the availability of things not yet seen' (CCC Art. 146). Faith is a gift from God, which enables us to trustfully believe without doubting that whatever has been proclaimed by God or uttered by his anointed ones, will surely come to pass. This is why the patriarch, Abraham, continues to shine brightly as a beacon of faith. While it may sound foolish and risky to the modern mind, in faith, Abraham obeyed and started off to a distance land, where he was told that he will receive the reward of a bountiful inheritance. By faith, Abraham believed that his descendants will supersede the grains of sand on the seashore, even when at 100 years, he hadn't sired a single child. In faith, Abraham was ready to be a homicider, provided God has uttered it.

Beloved, the letter to the Hebrew, from whence our first reading today emerge, speaks of faith in a very profound way. Here, faith is seen as perfect spiritual obedience. A childlike and free submission of the 'will' to the word that has been heard, because it's truth veracity is anchored on God, who himself is truth and doesn't deceive (Cf. Number 23:19). Faith is like a master key, that unlocks all spiritual doors, and a 'pass' that enable us to access God's good treasure. So, no matter how full of rich treasures a fortified house is, if you do not have the 'pass' or right key to open its door, you may only be seeing and savouring the goodness therein, but you cannot enjoy its contents. Beloved, have you observed that although Jesus is God with all the powers therein, he never performed a single miracle without seeking the faith level of the recipient. Hence, faith is indispensable if you desire miracle and blessings.

Beloved in Christ, do not be deceived by any body claiming to be a miracle worker. Do not hinge your hope for miracle on another mortal man. Do not think that your salvation and deliverance will come from without. No, your help shall only come from God. And for your help to come from God, you must bank your faith 100% on him. You must trust in his promises, and you must dispel every form of fear or doubt. I pray that as this month draws to an end, God will show himself mighty in your life according to the level of your faith.

Oh that today you would listen to his voice harden not your hearts (Ps.95:7-8)

LET US PRAY : Lord Jesus, I trust in you, help my faith in you never to dwindle even when you seem to be silent....

The Lord be with you....... and with your Spirit.

May Almighty God bless you in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit......Amen

Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Saturday Week 3 of Ordinary Time Year I - January 30, 2021

3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19

Mark 4:35-41

FAITH PUTS YOU ON FOCUS

The first reading of today talks so much about faith. It is a very important gift of God. To have faith does not only end in words, it is followed with actions. The first reading presents many people who acted out of faith. They may not have  been very sure of what they were doing, but they were sure that God will not lead them astray. Abraham left his hometown for a distant land that he did not know because he knew that God who has told him to go there will provide for him. Sarah was past child bearing age but had faith that God will keep his promise. Abraham agreed to offer the life of his son Isaac to God because he knew that the child came from God in the first place.

The reverse was the case in the gospel reading as we see the disciples of Jesus afraid of the wind. They failed to believe that Jesus would not have allowed them to perish. Jesus was in the same boat with them and they were afraid. Those who have faith do not struggle for things on their own, God fights for them. They do not think of life here on earth, but eternal home in heaven. God help us to have more faith in him. Amen.
