GOD CHASTISES THOSE HE LOVES
Growing up as children, we must have felt that our parents do not love us when they punish us. Some parents use various means to correct their children, the most common one is to use sticks to beat up a stubborn or arrogant child. Beating can be received for different things such as not doing the house chores, going out without permission or coming back late, talking rudely to elderly ones, not doing things accordingly, and so on. At those moments when they beat us, it was not because they hated us, but because they loved us.
This is exactly what the author of the letter to the Hebrews talks about today. When we suffer, we tend to think that God hates us and does not care about us; on the contrary, God allows us to go through some experiences in life because of what lies ahead of us in the future. If many of us were not disciplined by our parents, guidance, teachers and elderly ones, we may not have been successful as we are today. It is a blessing when you have someone who criticises you. Suffering is part of our training, and it is to prepare us for what lies ahead. God help us. Amen.
