MONDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1
Hebrews 5:1-10
Mark 2:18-22
PRIESTS ARE TO MEDIATE BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
Many people call and send messages asking for prayers for different intentions. As I put down their names and place inside my divine office so as to remember them during my prayers, as well as having their names on the altar during masses, it keeps me alert of my call and duty as a priest.
As I go through the first reading of today, it reminds me the fact that the reason my hands were anointed at ordination is for the purpose of blessing the people. When the gifts of bread and wine were given to me, it is for the purpose of offering prayers and masses for the people of God. This is what God has called me to do, just as Jesus was a mediator between God and man. The first reading reminds us that the priesthood we share is that of Christ. God calls those he needs, no one declares himself a priest.
The first reading also acknowledges that God decided to call man who is a sinner, weak and frail to participate in his divine life so that he may understand his fellow human beings and offer prayers for them when they come to him.
It is therefore important that as Christians we continue to make effort everyday to reach God. Let us reach him through his mediators in prayers and the sacraments, especially in the Holy Mass and the sacrament of reconciliation. Let us trust in what God has given us. As the gospel reading says, there is no need to mix new clothes and old clothes, or put new wine in old wine skins. What God has given to us is enough for our salvation. God help us. Amen.
