Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for January 4, 2021

MONDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

 1 JOHN 3:22-4:6

Matthew 4:12-17,23-25

NOT ALL SPIRITS ARE FROM GOD

On the last day of the year 2020, the first reading warned us against the antichrist and false prophets who seek souls to lead astray. As we enter a new year, we are also being warned against those who claim to have the Spirit of God in them. As John tells us today, not all spirits are from God. We therefore need to test every Spirit. There are so many false prophets out there, and many people still wake up daily and claim to have been called by God.

Every true preacher hinges on Jesus Christ, and he does not alienate human problems and sufferings from the happenings in their lives. A true preacher also admonish and call the people to repent from their sins.

This is very different from what we see today that many preachers only talk about breakthrough, prosperity and happiness. True prophets should also be ready to suffer and even die while doing the work of God as we see in the person of John the Baptist today.

Jesus also as the model for all prophets, went out to preach the gospel of salvation, calling the people to repentance and curing their diseases.

Let us therefore not be deceived by those who claim to have the Spirit of God and say they are prophets of God, they can lead us astray. By their fruits, you will know them. God help us to recognize him in those he has chosen. Amen.
