Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Tuesday Week 25 Ordinary time - September 22, 2020

TUESDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Proverbs 21:1-6,10-13, Luke 8:19-21

NATURAL WISDOM CAN LEAD TO GOD

Many of us grew up with so many wise sayings, proverbs and riddles, especially from the elders in our communities. Many of our elders in the rural communities are very rich with proverbs which when ruminated, makes a lot of meaning. Many of the elders may not be Christians, but they speak virtue and promote a good life.

Some wisdom writings in the bible may not have been written by prophets, but they are indeed inspired by God.

In the  first reading of today, we see from the book of proverbs many wise instructions that one must not overlook. It follows clearly the golden rule and the law of karma which are; 'do unto others what you would like done to you', and that 'it is what you sow that you will reap, or what goes around comes around'. You cannot plan evil for others and expect good things around you, you cannot neglect the cry of the poor and needy and expect God to listen to you when you call on him, you cannot steal and expect to be blessed, you cannot lie and expect a perfect life. It is when we repent from our sins that we can truly be human.

Christianity is a religion of faith, but we must also be wise so that we can serve God rightly. Jesus makes it very clear in the gospel reading, when he said that those who want to be saved should be wise like his mother who listen to his word and acted accordingly, instead of trying to cut corners by way of friendship, relationship and family ties. God help us. Amen.
